First Impressions of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D

It was a about time that Marvel did a return to the small screen and it was a great choice to pick Joss Whedon for this particular project. The Marvel universe has always been a big area booming with amazing super-heroes and deadly villains, but there are stories that either people do not know or don’t believe is that interesting. That is because some people have that idea if the character doesn’t have powers or dark ambitions; they are not really important to read about. However, the story of Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division or S.H.I.E.L.D holds many great stories with amazing Agents backing it up. That’s why I geeked out when I heard Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D was in the production and this week’s premiere was…well, I will explain more in this post.

The show takes place after the incident in New York where people are not exposed to the knowledge that we are not alone. In that they are also shown that we are also protected by those with powers willing to sacrifice their lives for the greater good. However, that exposure can bring in some serious attention that makes the universe aware that Earth is now a threat and the domestic villains have to step up their game in order to tackle on such a great adversary. That’s where S.H.I.E.L.D comes in with their way of policing and monitoring super activity, but the trippy part is the return of Agent Colson, who was killed in the Avengers movie. I already figured out how this was done from reading other marvel comic books, but I rather not spoil it with my theory. This time around there is a level 7 clearance that not even the Avengers have access to, but builds up the story around these Agents handpicked by Colson to fight for the greater good and deal with the new threat of certain people harnessing the “Chitari” technology from the battle. What is the new threat so far? The Extremis has been expanded to the TV series, which I found to be a smart move, because that tech should not end with Iron Man 3. Either way so far the story is starting off strong.

The two main characters from Film that appear are Agent Hill (Cobie Smulders) and Agent Phil Colson (Clark Gregg) of course, but I am so happy to see the return of Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May and damn she still looks good. The other cast members are Brett Dalton as Agent Grants Ward, who is supposed to be their male version of Black Widow, but after that interrogation scene, that went out of the window. The two brains of the operation are Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge). The addition of a civilian hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet) makes the whole team complete now. Now in great Whedon fashion the female protagonist seem to truly rule the show since in almost all of his shows they are shown as dominate and badass. I am expecting a lot of humor mixed in with dark situations that will make it a great show to watch.

Now here is where my wishful thinking starts to take over, because I am hoping that other hero cameos will show up on the show. Before you start waving your white flag, hear me out a bit, because I am talking about the ones that have not made it to big screen as of yet that they could use in the show. Here is a list of who I expect to team up with them from time to time.

  • Heroes for Hire Luke Cage and Iron Fist
  • The Punisher
  • White Tiger
  • Elektra
  • X-23
  • Warpath
  • Domino
  • Psylocke

There are more, but I do not want to flood the list and yes I think punisher should make a cameo for an episode. That brings me to my negative thoughts on this show, because S.H.I.E.L.D works closely to super-heroes and villains, so this puts the show on a very high budget and makes me wonder how they will implement this without breaking through the franchise of movies and tv. Also take into consideration that even though Marvel is now owned by Disney, the movie rights are scattered through companies. I would like to see an episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D where Logan is blackmailed by Colson to help with a mission to gain some of his memory back, but the trip they used is making Level 7 clearance that is higher than the other heroes. It is a good trick, but makes me raise an eye brow in the end.

In closing, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D gets a 4.5 out of 5 on the awesome scale. It has great action, funny moments, a powerful cast and hopefully will last a long time with great comic book situations. Even with some difficult drawbacks that they will have to deal with in the future episodes, I myself am all in each Tuesday. I hope you check out the show every Tuesday at 8pm est. on ABC. Stay frosty!
