Kuma’s Review of Guilty Gear XX Λ Core Plus

I will confess something fight fans, Kuma sucks at most 2D fighters. I do not understand it at all and it frustrated me for a long time until Guilty Gear entered my life and my mind was blown. In my opinion it was one of the best fighting 2D fighters out there with an interesting story-line, great soundtrack and unique fighting styles for a weapon based game. There were a few weapons based 2D fighters before that, most known is Samurai Showdown. However Guilty Gear was just the better title for me. There were many sequels, but recently Guilty Gear XX Λ Core Plus is now available for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox as a downloadable game. I kid you not gamers I did the Apache dance when I saw this on the screen, but does it live up to the original of 2007? Let’s find out shall we?

The original title was released on the PlayStation 3 almost a decade ago and now they re-mastered it for a direct download with full multi-player online battles. It looks and feels as smooth as it did, but as an HD remix; I do not see the difference. I had to take a step back into the pass and whip out my old console to check out the difference and with some scientific know how with space aged physics and a super magnifying glass; I finally came to the conclusion. The graphics are pretty close, but the controls are a lot better and faster. The graphics were just brightened a bit, but that does not matter. The important question to us fighting fans, “Does it work?” It does that and more my friends. If you remembered any of the play style of the GGXX, you would understand why this should be in your library. The main unique feature is the “Destroyed” mode and this is a true gamble because once activated, there is a fifty/fifty chance of success or fail. This is a one shot kill that can be performed anytime through the game and if you have a full tension bar, there is a meter that starts going down. In that time you can turn it off, but it is so cool and causes so much rage when performed right.

In terms of game modes, I favor M.O.M and Story mode. In the M.O.M or mission mode which is a version of survival mode with level up features. It is a great way to power up your character and collects some gold items once you attack your opponent. If you survive through the waves that is, but the story mode has always been unique because each character will have their own special disadvantages. In an example I used Chipp Zanuff and was fighting an opponent who took away my jumping ability, which was not too bad since you can fight other ways to launch yourself in the air, but that in itself was a nice challenge. There is also a choice system through the story-line for each character or as some would call it a “Fork in the road” story option.

There is regular survival mode and of course your classic Arcade mode where you just go through waves of enemies until you reach the final boss. In the words of my comrade Under, who brought up a good point in many fighting games. The fact that you can go through eight different enemies no problem getting a perfect each time and then the game decides to give you that uber badass. You know the one that I am talking about! There is that one A.I character that is performing godlike moves without hesitation or glitches. This A.I totally ruins your winning streak and causes you to make some dumb mistakes. I know many of you have faced such a character or what some consider the “Sub Boss” in the game. The main reaction would be to rage and kick the TV like a Spartan, but just put the controller down to analyze the situation. I promise you will succeed, or probably rage…either way something will happen.

Character Roster:

  • A.B.A
  • Anji Mito
  • Axl Low
  • Baiken
  • Chipp Zanuff
  • Dizzy
  • Jam Kuradoberi
  • Justice
  • Kliff Undersn
  • Ky Kiske
  • May
  • Potemkin
  • Sol Badguy
  • Testament
  • Zato-1/Eddie

There is only one minor flaw within the multi-player and it is a common thing which I wish was fixed for many fighting games, but it takes time. The first time I went to try the multi-player I got in quickly, but the second time I am not sure if the connection was just bad or the dude raged quit on me. I honestly do not know. After that I could not get into another match and one wait lasted for almost 4 minutes before it timed out. It is cool, it is just the first week and I do hope they fix that quickly.

Guilty Gear XX Λ Core Plus has a download price point of $14.99 or 1200 Xbox points is worth the BUY! The all-around essence of Guilty Gear is amazing and hardcore feel towards it. I always wanted them to make an anime of the game; however known was established outside of the many intro videos. There have been a lot of revamps to classic fighters, but I am very glad that this title was released and I hope they are eager to make a sequel if this brings back fans of the series. I hope you check out the game and enjoyed my review. Guilty Gear XX Λ Core Plus is available now and I hope to see you on the battlefield so LET’S ROCK! Stay frosty gamers.
